If Apple Had the Money
If Apple had a lot of money laying around to acquire a business, I believe one of the best selections would be Adobe.
The Adobe product line would compliment Apple's Pro applications nicely (or vice versa). Also, many high-end Mac users utilize Adobe applications to produce their creative works -- the most popular being Photoshop. What happens when this portion of your customer base waits for a new version of Photoshop before purchasing a new Mac Pro? Let me put it this way -- I have been told that businesses experience the most success when customers are buying their products. It is a strange phenomenon, and something I have never been able to grasp fully. So, I guess in this case it is a bad thing to have Adobe control your customers spending habits.
32 minutes, 36 seconds in to the Q4'06 Apple Quarterly Earnings Call Chris Whitmore from Deutsche Bank asks about the Mac Pro "to what extent is demand still pent up as we are waiting for key applications like Creative Suite, etc to become Universal before we see better shipments for that product"? Tim Cook, Apple's COO responds to this question as follows. "... We are still seeing what we believe is a delay in purchasing that we think primarily is associated with applications in particular the Creative Suite." I am not going to comment in any detail to what occurs shortly after the question was asked. I would however like to personally clear the air on this subject -- we here at AppleHound have a long standing policy to not delve into these types of discussions. We like to think of ourselves as maintaining the utmost in journalistic integrity and professionalism. Thank you for your understanding.
Many Apple products rely on flash memory -- why not buy Samsung? Alright, we are crazy, but not that Crazy. First of all, Samsung is a huge company made up of 85,000+ employees and a product line that dwarfs Apple. Second, Apple needs to focus on those things that make them good -- mainly software and computer systems (not components).
Probably not in the near future. Apple can't afford Adobe right now, and in my option they have their hands full running their own company. This might be something they will want to tackle after they finish their domination of the mobile phone market.
